Chrome Launches New Generation of Apps - Tech Update

As Google Chrome celebrates its fifth
anniversary, Google has released a new
generation of Chrome apps. Google already offers web apps with
extended functionality in its Chrome
Web Store and launched its quasi-start
menu Chrome App Launcher in July but
these apps are offer even more. These
new apps function independently from the browser and even have the
capability to work offline. The apps can
be stored on a cloud storage system like
Google Drive which allows users to
access and save documents, photos,
videos on their hard drive. The apps will offer desktop notifications
for reminders
and updates, and will automatically
update if there are no changes to the app
permissions. The apps will be synced
across devices linked the same account
and will be able to interact with the computer's USB port, Bluetooth, and
other connected devices including digital
cameras. The Chrome App Launcher, which works
as a start menu for Chrome apps, features
shortcuts for the installed Chrome apps.
The shortcuts in the Launcher open the
apps in independent windows. There is
also a search bar in the App Launcher to make finding apps even easier. Google
announced the new apps on its Chrome
blog saying, "Today we're unveiling a
new kind of Chrome App, which brings
together the speed, security and
flexibility of the modern web with the powerful functionality previously only
available with software installed on your
devices. (Think apps designed for your
desktop or laptop, just like the ones for
your phone and tablet.) These apps are
more powerful than before, and can help you get work done, play games in full-
screen and create cool content all from
the web."
